"GP experience after returning to Scotland from 20 years abroad"

About: NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as the patient),

I lived abroad for a number of years. I was able to visit a GP 6 days a week when I lived in Australia and 6 days a week when I lived in the USA. I never complained once about any medical practitioner while living abroad for those 20 years.

Since returned to the Scotland I've found the four GP's I've seen in the last two years to be unwelcoming, cold, rude and irritated. I have no major health issues. I've been to my GP surgery four times in the last 2 years, for UTI, throat infection twice and eye drops for an Optometrist diagnosed dry eye condition.

I'm never late for an appointment, have never cancelled or missed an appointment and I'm always prepared and aware of the GP's time constraints.

It is really clear to me that the GP's I've seen are used to treating patients in a manner that would never be accepted where I've lived abroad. I seems they feel they can talk over you and generally be really ill mannered.

What is going on here in the UK? These doctors seem to seriously dislike their jobs and in turn seem to me to despise seeing patients. It's so disappointing.

I work in a small team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which seeks to involve patients and carers in the work of the NHS. The biggest part of my role is in managing feedback projects across the Board area, one of which is Patient Opinion. It is my job to give our patients and carers the opportunity to give us feedback, and to make sure that this is passed to the right people to help us improve the services we provide.

Dear Bird,

I agree that it is very disappointing that you have had this experience with your GPs since you returned to Scotland and I am sorry that you have found the manner in which you have been treated to be lacking and less than what we would expect for any of our patients.

As GP's are independent contractors, the best way to make sure that your feedback is taken on board and used to improve the service is for you to send the details of your experience to the Practice Manager at the surgery you attend. Alternatively, you can contact me directly with the name of your surgery and I will pass it on to them on your behalf. My email address is lorna.gray@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.

Best Wishes,

Lorna
