"Rejected without consideration"

About: Newcastle Dental Hospital

I have not visited a dentist for 3 years, following an extremely traumatic experience with a dentist in Sunderland, that left me traumatised and lacking in confidence. For some months now I have experienced profuse bleeding from my gums, and in the past 2 weeks a crown has fallen off, causing pain and discomfort. It has taken me weeks to build up the courage to go to the dental hospital, but today I went....because I am vey worried about my mouth. The member of staff on reception was absolutely professional and helpful, however they had to inform me that no-one would see me. I was visibly distressed, and with credit to this gentleman they did try again...and again I was refused consultation or advice...other than to "swab the bleeding with a cotton bud" . I foolishly believed that this clinic was for NH patients? I do not have a dentist and desperately needed help.

Response from Newcastle Dental Hospital

Thank you for leaving feedback regarding your experience at the Dental Hospital. We are sorry that we were unable to see you when you attended the hospital recently. From your comments it sounds as though you were trying to access our Dental Emergency Service which is an open access emergency service aimed at helping patients who suddenly require dental care and do not have their own dentist. Whilst we accept that you were experiencing particular dental problems on the day you attended, as these were not of an ‘emergency’ nature we had to decline to see you. We can only recommend that you seek care at a ‘high street’ dentist in the first instance. There is a search facility on the home page of NHS Choices which allows users to locate practices close to their home.
