"Single sex bays - Mixed bays are ..."

About: Royal Sussex County Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

Single sex bays - Mixed bays are not a good idea. New privacy curtains are smart and actually give privacy! Lots of hand gel around. Food choices were good - something for everyone and arrived hot.

What could be improved

There was no body bothered to come and speak to you about what was going on. You are just left in your bed. I had to keep asking about when I could expect the treatment I needed only to then be told that someone had "not put the form in" and didn't get the treatment I needed and was asked for by the Consultant! The toilet in the ward was not cleaned once during the 24 hours I was there. I had to wipe the floor of wee before I used it! The ward I was on had two elderly ladies with broken arms. Nobody helped them eat their dinner or sit up properly in bed to do so. I DID IT FOR THE NURSES!! Appalling! They are too busy chatting at the Nurse station. Most of them look like they don't want to be there either - miserable faces! Healthcare assistants do a good job changing bed pans etc but shouldn't they be helping the infirm to eat and drink? They milled around alot of the time. Patients are just left in their beds where they are quiet and no problem to anyone. The lady next to me had no idea when/what they were doing with her - she was very smelly and needed a shower but was infirm. No wonder people get depressed in hospital.

Anything else?

I noticed one of the healthcare assistants take off a plaster from a lady receiving blood through a catheter in her arm - WITHOUT GLOVES! Surely that is basic hygiene?
