"Children's blood tests"

About: Chesterfield Royal Hospital

I was in the waiting area of the den when I recently brought my little boy to his paediatric appointment. Whilst I was waiting I overheard what appeared to be a Dad of a patient complaining quite loudly. It would appear that the staff had had to make several attempts to get blood from his young daughter and Dad was unhappy about this and was very rude and vocal. This saddened me so much. I too had brought my little boy of a similar age for blood tests the morning of Mon 9/3/15 and found the service to be wonderful. He quite clearly had no visible veins and therefore the nurses had to repeatedly try and find one. My little boy hardly made a murmur while this was going on due to the numbing gel and the gentleness of how he was handled. I had also had to bring my four year old with me who the staff were also wonderful with and made a big fuss of. We were all made to feel very comfortable and what could have been a really unpleasant situation was the exact opposite. I cannot praise the staff enough. I also think the facilities are great. My children enjoyed watching the fish on the TV and they love waiting for the dog to come and have a wee every quarter of an hour! Working for the NHS myself I am all too aware you far more often hear the negatives, so I felt compelled to write and congratulate your excellent care. Many thanks, Lindsey

Response from Chesterfield Royal Hospital

Dear Lindsey - it is really kind of you to share your thoughts and experiences. I agree that the Den is a fun place to be - my son loved it when he was younger! I'm pleased to read that you and your young son have had great care. Taking blood from children is notoriously difficult and we know that for some parents worry and anxiety can result in frustration. Sometimes our staff bear the brunt of this and whilst we would hope no-one treats them with disrespect, it does happen and we're always incredibly disappointed when it does. Thank you for being supportive of the team and I will be pleased to share your comments with them. Kind regards Sarah Turner-Saint head of communications
