"I attended the day surgery unit ..."

About: St Mary's Hospital (Newport)

(as the patient),

What I liked

I attended the day surgery unit twice this year (August and November) for cataract eye surgery. I cannot praise the entire team highly enough. Everyone from nurses to anaesthetists and surgeon were wonderful and looked after me really well. I am rather nervous about hospitals and wasn't looking forward to a general anaesthetic but both anaesthetists I saw (different on each occasion) and their assistants were brilliant at helping to put me at my ease. All the staff in the operating theatre were very kind and friendly and smiled alot which always helps!

After my second op the anaesthetist came out to see me afterwards and check I was OK and we shared a joke.

I can't praise the day surgery unit enough - one minor fault perhaps is that the two receptionists were a bit poker faced but then again it was 7.30 in the morning so maybe I should forgive them that!

What could be improved

Not much. We did have to wait quite a long time for medication to come up from the pharmacy (two hours) so we had to keep feeding the parking meter which is always a pain but apart from that there's not much else they could improve.

Thank you for taking the time to post your positive feedback, your comments have been passed to the staff of the Day Surgery Unit.

With regards to the time taken for your medication to arrive; we are sorry you experienced this wait, however please be assured that the time taken for medication to be prepared and delivered to patients in St Mary's is significantly lower than in some other hospitals. The Pharmacy department has set a standard time of 4 hours maximum, from receiving a request for medication to delivering it to patients who may be on wards, in out-patient departments or attending services across the Island. We note your comment with regard to car parking; the revenue you have contributed to is used for the upkeep and security of the car parks.
