Recently I fell from a height of 20 feet, fracturing a leg bone in multiple places. Our nearest A&E department is Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury, so we rushed in by car to get there as quickly as possible.
Arrived at A&E at 12pm, and I was seen by the triage nurse within 10 minutes, but from then onwards the experience went downhill. After initially being toldd that I would be seen within 35 minutes, I waited for over an hour to be seen. X-Rays confirmed it was a nasty fracture, and the radiographer said I'd need an emergency op on the that night. Then it took 10 hours to get into a ward bed.
Some examples of things that have gone wrong:
Temporary cast was put on after 5 hours because the consultant forgot to have it done
Emergency bells pressed a few times, taking up to 30 minutes to be responded to
Ice packs left on the leg until hot
Nurses continually forgetting to replenish IV fluids and administer painkillers
The trauma unit at the the operating theatre not communication day on day so that surgeons not aware of multiple cancellations
Operating theatre didn't notify ward staff that daily cancellations were happening
Doctor not seen for 36 hours
Leg cast was cut open and then not redone
Two and a half days later and I'm still in the hospital waiting for the op after being continually bumped down the list with a severely swollen leg and in constant pain, with plenty of apologies from nurses, but no consultants or registrar taking an interest or responsibility.
"Disgraceful surgical experience"
