"Not allowed family member when in labour"

About: Heartlands Hospital

I had an induced labour, and on the ward visiting hours were 8-830. My birth partners left at 8:30 and i began having contractions at around 11:30 on the night. Gradually the contractions got worse so i had pain releif ( paracetemol, codine, codidromal and pethadine) as they got worse i requested numerous occoasions to have my mom come up to me but i was told no, not until visiting hours. However i was in labour, i asked to be examined to see how far into labour i was but was told no as i had the 24 hour pessary to induce me so they wouldn't do it until the 24 hours was up. Eventually the pain was that strong the midwife examined me at 7 in the morning to find i was dialated 5cm. I am 16 years old with my first child so had no idea what to encounter with labour and feel i was ignored when telling them about the pain because of my age and them thinking i have a lower pain threshold. It was a lonely, upsetting experience. Due to this my mom got to me with 5 minutes before my son was born and my boyfriend missed the birth. This is deeply upsetting for us all as its sn experience which can not be brought back for all the money in the world.

Dear Megan

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments regarding your experience at Heartlands Hospital Maternity Unit.

May I firstly congratulate you on the safe arrival of your son!

I am very sorry to read that despite you asking for your mother to be contacted and asked to come up to be with you that you were denied this. I am aware that whilst on the main ward visitors are not allowed outside of visiting hours, but that once on the delivery suite, birth partners are allowed to stay with you. Although, visitors outside of visiting hours on the ward are at the Ward Managers or Midwife in Charges' discretion. I will forward your initial comments above to the matron for that area and would ask that you contact me directly so that I can obtain more information from you. You can either call on 0121 424 0808 or email me: marie.helebert@heartofengland.nhs.uk.

I hope this is acceptable and I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards

Marie Helebert
