"Our Experience of the Louth A&E department"

About: County Hospital Louth / General medicine

Yesterday my wife fell and cut her leg through to the bone and as she is a warfarin patient it was imperative to get treatment urgently. After trying unsuccessfully to get an ambulance I managed to get her into my car and to the Louth A&E. By the time we arrived my wife was poorly and I was frantic, however, from the second we entered the department, staff took over, the receptionist was calm and welcoming and took our details without the usual constant questions about personal details etc, the nurse was on their way for their lunch break, at 5pm having been on duty from 0800am, they saw my wife in a distressed state and me obviously worried, they came straight to us and took us into a side room, the Dr followed almost immediately and agreed a course of action, blood was still oozing and the flesh was wide open exposing the bone. The nurse set about the task of repairing and dressing the wound with meticulous and gentle care reassuring my wife at every stage of the process, their tummy was rumbling and they were obviously very hungry but despite instructions from more senior staff they did not leave my wife side for a second and not before they had finished the dressing and repair, they made a superb join in my wife wound, my wife has wafer thin skin so stitches were not an option. The nurse was everything we as a nation have come to expect from our NHS they were an NHS Angel in the truest tradition and we are forever grateful to them in particular and all the staff concerned, receptionist Dr and other so involved in our treatment. The nurse was on duty until 9pm and although we were leaving, they still had to go and write up their notes before they could go for their first meal since coming on duty at 0800. They are a true professional, thank you.
