"D5 day case"

About: Stepping Hill Hospital

Firstly I want to say that I'm a person who gives credit where credit is due and always enjoy writing thank you cards or leaving positive reviews when I've experienced good service in life. It therefore saddens me that I write to complain about my experience on ward D5 when attending for surgery yesterday. I arrived at 7am to be greeted by lovely, reassuring nursing and care staff who prepared me for theatre. All very friendly with welcoming smiley faces. The Doctor doing my surgery came down to see me prior to theatre and they too were lovely and informative. No issues in the morning at all. However upon returning from the recovery room having had my surgery I was met with the afternoon shift of staff who quite frankly I can only compare to fish wives!! Loud cackling, shouting down corridors to one another, arguing over who was taking which holidays and when, discussing how much they wanted a vodka and tonic and gossiping about other wards using their wheelchairs and not bringing them back. In my opinion all of the above was the height of unprofessionalism and lack of manners/compassion for those of us who were in a lot of pain and feeling very sleepy after our surgery. In the morning I knew the names of the staff caring for me as they introduced themselves. In the afternoon not one of them said ' my name is' again height of bad practise. The emphasis from the afternoon staff was quite simply to get us up and out as quickly as possible. I was told off for not drinking my tea because I had dozed off (under the morphine) and tutted at when I couldnt face any toast. I was then asked 5 times in 10 minutes to pass water which I failed to do understandably as I had been nil by mouth since 5am and only had half a cup of tea, there was nothing to pass! When I said I was struggling the nurse rolled her eyes at me and said I better try again because they needed me out by 5! I understand it's a day case procedure and believe me the last thing I wanted was to be there longer than I had to but I felt man handled, told off like a child and was rushed in my groggy state to get dressed and get out. No assistance given to help me get out of bed or dressed despite me feeling unsteady on my feet. On their orders I tried to pass water again but just couldn't although I said I had so I could get out of there and from under their feet. The morning experience was great and my consultant a delight to deal with, but unfortunately the aftercare was horrendous and I certainly wouldn't recommend this hospital to anybody nor will I ever opt to return in the future.
