"83 year old without food or drink"

About: Harrogate District Hospital

My mother who is 83 was due into Harrogate Hospital for an operation this morning. She could not eat or drink after midnight last night. She last ate at 10pm. We were asked to arrive at the hospital for 7.30am. We arrived promptly. She had to sit in a waiting room and did not see a doctor until 2pm in the afternoon. At 3.45pm in the afternoon she still had not been taken to theatre. This is over 17 hours for an 83 year old to go without food and drink. There was another patient who had the same experience, although he went into theatre earlier than my mother. Shocking treatment, no matter how pleasant the nursing staff are.

Hello - firstly, sincere apologies for the delay in responding to your post.

Your comments are of concern to us. Wherever possible staff in our Pre-operative Assessment & Admissions Unit (PAAU) proactively liaise with surgeons and anaesthetists to try and avoid lengthy waits to go to theatre and unnecessary fasting. However, on this occasion it seems that this did not happen, and we'd like to investigate why and feed back to you.

Would you be able to get in touch with us please? You can do this via our Patient Experience Team on 01423 555499 or thepatientexperienceteam@hdft.nhs.uk. Please mention when you make contact it is to follow up a Patient Opinion posting. We do hope to hear from you.

Many thanks for your comments.
