"Doesn't anyone talk English?"

About: Southmead Hospital

I recently had to stay on Gate 34b and can’t fault the nursing care that I received. Everyone was kind, caring and considerate from the domestics through to the doctors. You can tell at times that there is a shortage of staff but everyone did their best to make sure the care I received wasn’t compromised. There was though one issue that I found frustrating. At times some of the nurses weren’t speaking English. As someone who has not long had a procedure and already feeling confused and disorientated this made me feel at times paranoid and like elements of my care were being discussed behind my back. What didn’t help is that this became even worse over night when there were less staff around and I was more tired. This wasn’t an isolated event but happened at the nursing desk as well as outside mine and other patient’s rooms.

Dear Anonymous – Thank you for taking the time and trouble to post your kind comments about your care on ward 34B. I was sorry to learn of your concerns over the language used by staff, and it is unacceptable if they did not use English at all times. Your comments have been shared with the staff involved. Kind regards – Steve Sykes Advice and Complaints Team
