"Rude, aggressive, unpleasant staff in A&E"

About: Worthing Hospital

Whilst on holiday in France I had an accident and snapped several ligaments in my knee. Unsure what we should do upon rerun to the UK, and because I was landing on a Sunday, having taken the advice of several friends who work in the NHS, we went to A&E thinking this would be the quickest and simplest way to see a doctor (as I had literally been patched up in France and hadn't been given enough pain relief) and get in the system. Right from the start trying to explain the situation to the receptionist, my experience was unpleasant. The receptionist was rude and unhelpful. Then seen by a triage nurse, who was also quite rude with an awkward attitude and seemed to imply I was wasting theirs and my time coming here. Was told it would be approx 2.5 hrs wait. After about 3 hours I was eventually seen by a practice nurse whose attitude was the worst of them all. They were quite aggressive with me, telling me I couldn't see an orthopaedic surgeon for at least 10 days. However which way I tried to explain my situation, why we had come to A&E in Worthing as it was out of hours and I was away fr home (so I could be looked after by my parents) so couldn't see my own GP, they seemed to be wilfully misunderstanding me when I said I just needed to be seen by a doctor at this stage so I could have a referral. Treated me as if I was being difficult and demanding for presenting at A&E with a serious injury and asking to see a doctor. Left me in a little room for over an hour more whilst they kept going making phonecalls - which I could overhear them talking about me saying 'I wouldn't accept that'. Unprofessional, unpleasant attitude and a very far cry from some semblance of compassion for someone who comes in in pain, unable to walk, upset, tired after traveling all day and very unsure as to what happens next. All in all after waiting almost 4 hours by this point and being told, grudgingly, that if I insisted on seeing a doctor it would be at least another hour and a half wait. At no point was I even offered any pain relief. We left in the end as I was finding their treatment extremely upsetting. Dreadful attitude of the staff in A&E, I don't care how overworked the staff are there is no excuse for the way they treated me. I could not be more disappointed in the NHS.
