"Lack of Mental Health Care and Support"

About: Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust / Adult mental health

(as the patient),

I suffer from depression and suicidal thoughts. I went to A+E and I ended up on the Northside Mental Health Department.

At first, they were very helpful, but after 2 weeks I was getting paranoid and I didn’t feel it was helping me being there. Therefore, I signed myself out because I wasn’t sectioned.

After discharging myself, I was receiving home visits and they weren’t very helpful so I ended up taking tablets. I then went to Rochdale A+E and they sent me to heart ward in Bury so they could monitor me all night. Then I ended up in the Rochdale mental health ward, they were very helpful but the day after I went back to Oldham mental health ward were I wanted to stay so I could get better after being there a week.

I had a disagreement with a night nurse and then the next day I saw a doctor. He had heard the night nurses side of the story and wanted to hear mine but then he started talking over me and wouldn’t let me speak. I said calmly I will walk out of here if you keep speaking over me and shouting at me. He said go ahead then, so I got up and walked out and he followed me down the corridor shouting at me in-front of staff and patients. Then he said you are dismissed from this hospital.

So I had to pack my bags and leave. A week or two later I was feeling suicidal again, I ended up back at the A+E in Oldham and I spoke to one of the mental health staff. I said to her I was going to commit suicide and she turned around and said go ahead then do it.

I have lost trust and faith in the NHS. I have to look after myself basically. The mental health staff are supposed to be caring, understanding and I didn't see any of these things. No help, I just go to GP now for medication.
