"Glossop ward"

About: North Devon District Hospital

I was horrified with the lack of everything in this ward. My mother was transferred to glossop ward after a stay in intensive care following an operation, the ward was filthy with previous patients belongings and medication bags hidden behind the storage cabinet beside my mums bed, and blood/bodily fluid splats on the floor around the bed. I waited for the cleaner to finish cleaning my mums bay before commenting. The cleaner had finished (if brushing a floor is classed as cleaning!!!) I then told them the things I had spotted. The cleaner did then remove the previous patients things from the floor behind the cabinet by placing them on to my mums clean bed after saying "oh I don't know what patients these were!!" Disgusted!! My mother has had a serious operation and placing dirty dusty belongings on the bed on which she is sleeping is disgraceful especially not knowing who's they were and how long they had been there!! The staff are over stretched and tired! Their attention to detail is lacking. My mother was waiting 1 1/2 hours after buzzing her bedside bell for a commode wich resulted in her soiling herself!! She asked for a pillow on the evening she arrived, and help into bed, the nurse said they would see of there was one available, nurse goes out the bay turns the lights off and disappeared for the evening. My mum was sat in darkness on the side of the bed waiting for this nurse to come back if not with the pillow to help her into bed. She waited over an hour before buzzing and it took another 45 mins for the nurse to arrive to assist my mum into bed! This seamed such an inconvenience for the nurse, they would not see anyone for 4hours at a time (except for mornings when doctors and surgeons done there rounds!). When my mum asked how her oxygen levels were the answers were "there fine" never explaining what her levels were. She was only in there for 3 days, and thank goodness for that. The poor staff are far to over run, I just hope my mums I well enough to be discharged because it seamed a big rush to empty the ward before the weekend, she doesn't seam well enough to any of our family, only time will tell. I don't however in any way shape or form have anything bad to say about intensive care ward there fantastic, nothing is to much trouble it's clean (spotless!) and everything was explained in detail regarding mums care. Glossop wards however is disgraceful

Dear Katie I am really sorry you felt your and your mother's experience on Glossop did not meet your expectations. I understand the ward Sister has been in touch and asked if you would like us to investigate your concerns so we can learn from them. If you would like to progress this, please contact our PALS team on 01271 314 090 or write to the Chief Executive at North Devon District Hospital. Kind regards Katherine
