"Too many chiefs, not enough Indians"

I had a full knee replacement this year at the Northern General Hospital. The care by the nursing staff was excellent and by the doctors. However, I must say the food we received on our ward was really not up to my standard and I feel in the well being of patients who are recuperating from major surgery. In one instance we received sausages cooked the day before, peas, carrots and sweet corn which seemed to be dunked in hot water and mashed potatoes made with Cadburys smash which was not even properly mixed as it was full of dried powder.

I don’t think Oliver Twist would be asking for seconds! Being diabetic I ordered the appropriate meals and got anything but what I ordered which I don’t think was suitable.

Unfortunately, I was made to bed rest because the blood pressure monitor (3-1 machine) kept saying my BP was low when in fact it turned out to be faulty for three days. This hindered my recovery because I was not allowed to get up and move the new joint. I cannot blame the staff but I think only management for really seeing these issues were not dealt with, especially when I had made my feelings known. Otherwise, I have high praise for the nursing staff that really work hard and look after you in very trying conditions due to, as the phrase goes, “Too many chiefs not enough Indians”.
