"I cannot fault the dedication and professionalism of the SCBU staff"

About: West Middlesex University Hospital

(as a service user),

I have to completely disagree with a previous poster with regards to the standard of care received at West Middlesex University Hospital's special care baby unit (SCBU). My first son was born at 25 weeks gestation at this hospital and spent the duration of his short life in SCBU. I have to say that from my experience, mothers of premature babies are encouraged to express milk because very premature babies are often too weak or underdeveloped to breastfeed at first. I think it is important for mothers to continue to express though, so that their milk supply does not diminish and also this milk can be used to tube feed. I found that West Middlesex has a very strong “breast is best” attitude as far as I am concerned. I cannot fault the dedication and professionalism of the SCBU staff. In addition, the staff were compassionate, supportive and towers of strength. They work extremely hard under very stressful and emotionally draining circumstances.
