"Emergency care at Hairmyres Hospital"

About: Hairmyres Hospital / Emergency department Hairmyres Hospital / Neurology

(as a relative),

My partner attended A&E at Hairmyres before being admitted overnight and transferred to the Southern General the following day.

He had neurological symptoms later diagnosed as a brain haemorrhage. Our GP called ahead and we were taken without any delays. I was very impressed by the professionalism, care, efficiency and sensitivity delivered by staff in A&E and ward 2. Nursing and medical staff treated us with respect and concern that offered great comfort.

I would like to especially mention that the porter who we spent a short time with us (transferring us to the ward ) had a positive impact on us due to his lovely approach to care.

I do question however why essential tests for neurological presentations e. g CT scans are not available out of hours? Waiting overnight for a diagnosis and therefore treatment plan for such presentations are therefore delayed considerably with attached risk to the health and well being of the patient.

Many thanks to all the staff who contributed to the care of my partner.

Dear Ms Harris

Thanks for taking the time to tell us about your recent experience. I'm really glad you found the staff looking after your partner to be professional, efficient and most of all caring. Thank you particularly for mentioning how helpful the porter who transferred your partner was, as sometimes they are very much the unsung heros! I'll make sure that your comments are passed on to all mentioned.

I'm sorry your partner had to wait until morning for tests to be carried out. We (like most other hospitals) have a reduced service for some procedures, such as CT scanning, which means that patients are risk assessed on an individual basis as to whether they require this to be carried out immediately or whether it can wait till morning. I'm sorry that this delayed your partner's diagnosis, and prolonged what must have been a frightening experience.

I do hope your partner makes a safe and speedy recovery.
