My 85 year old father has been receiving care for the past two years at home. He now has carers coming in four times per day, including a bedtime visit. In December 2014 he had to spend some time in hospital and as part of his care package he was to have an assessment by occupational therapy regarding any further needs, including showering facilities. He was discharged from hospital, with a catheter, just before christmas and I contacted OT on 5 January to be told he was on a list.

I have been in contact with his doctor, Social Work and Occupational Therapy Departments to no avail. The OT contacted me at the beginning of this week to say that he is still on the list for a visit but they cannot tell me when he will receive this visit. He is presently back in hospital as he has a chest infection and other medical problems and my concern is he will still not be receiving the quality of care he requires. He is not very mobile, suffering from paggets disease, arthritis and recently was diagnosed with borderline dementia.

Thank you for getting in touch about your fathers care. I am sorry to hear that your father is in hospital and also sorry to hear that he needs to wait on the Occupational Therapy staff visiting him. This is due to the way the service prioritises need.

People that have high risk needs are always prioritised by the service. People with lower level needs usually have to wait on a routine waiting list.

The managers of Occupational Therapy services are working on ways to shorten waits for all people. I will pass your message onto them for information.

If you think that your fathers health has deteriorated since he was last assessed please get back in touch with the service to update the Occupational Therapy staff.

It is also important that your father gets the appropriate supports for his other conditions such as the 'borderline dementia'. If your GP has not already referred your father to a support service, it would be worth talking with him/her about this.

I hope that your father makes a swift recovery.

Hi was just wondering what the OT categoric prioritise waiting time is for him he has... Pagets disease, Parkinsonism, CKD, COPD,Diverticulitis,& borderline dementia. We have been waiting now since 2 weeks before Christmas and nobody has even been out to see him yet. Thats over 15 weeks. At the age of 85 we think he deserves better than this.
