"First class care on Ewhurst Ward"

About: Royal Surrey County Hospital

My 92 year old mother fell and broke her hip while visiting me. After receiving excellent care in A and E on a Friday night she was then transferred to Ewhurst ward. I am an ex nurse who worked on ITU so I was coming at this with a critical eye! Also this ward is a very busy and 'heavy' ward being orthopaedics and full of elderly patients with complex problems I have so many compliments I don't know where to begin! 1) She was operated on very promptly (on the following day Saturday) 2) She was cared for by a team of kind and professional nurses and staff 3) at no time was any member of staff less than excellent, respectful and very professional 4) The nurses were from all over the planet, and many of them male. Treating elderly ladies with dignity was the norm. My Mum thought them wonderful 5) The sheer volume of staff including physios, OT's etc was amazing. the fact that they operate as a team so well is a credit to the managers 6) The ward was clean and sheets changed often. Nursing care was excellent 7) The doctors I spoke with were very compassionate 8) having a designated pharmacist checking and explaining the meds was a revelation to me 9) the OT department facilitated my Mum's transfer to Intermediate care up in the Wirral smoothly My only small negative comment was that once she was deemed ready to go it seemed quite rushed, and had I not offered to drive my Mum up to the Wirral ( 4-5 hour drive) I am not sure how she would have been transported. Private ambulance would have been very costly and some patients and their families might have been unable to afford that. Please do pass on my comments to everyone involved. If this is the norm for your hospital then you should be very proud indeed. If the media is to be believed, nurses are filing their nails at the desk while frail patients lie in wet beds! This is so far from the truth at the RSCH!

Good morning, Thank you for the extremely positive comments, and from a medically trained person! It's great to hear that we are doing so well. I will make sure I pass these comments onto the Ewhurst Ward. I hope your mother is recovering well.
