"The doctor for Thyroid surgery"

About: King Edward VII Hospital

I have had many problems with my thyroid including being overdosed in the past causing other health problems. However, it started feeling as though it was strangling me about 2 years ago. This got steadily worse until I was referred to the doctor. This led to surgery to remove the thyroid. My first appointment with the doctor after various tests had been performed was in October 2014. Scans were repeated and samples taken to make sure the data was accurate. I am used to surgery but was quite anxious about this particular surgery being so close to my throat and because the scar would be visible, unlike previous surgery. Having one experience of horrendous scarring in the past that even the surgeon admitted they did not do a good job on, this contributed to my fear. I need not have worried. The doctor put me at ease answering all my questions, making me aware of complications and inspiring confidence in their ability. They gave me time and really listened to my concerns and questions. My operation was Friday 13th February, which turned out to be very lucky. The end result is a scar that I am pleased to say is much smaller than expected, and likely to fade with time. I also did not need a drain as I had expected from other people I know who have had the same operation. As a carer I needed to leave hospital as soon as safely was possible and managed to reduce the expected stay. Altogether, this has been a very good experience of good practice and professionalism at its best. Thank you!
