"We think my dad has deteriorated on a normal ward"

About: Barnsley Hospital / General surgery

(as a relative),

My dad went in for a colostomy op. He is 81 and frail so it was not a good start, he put 8lbs on up to the op on advice. This was hard as he was eating but it was going straight through. We took him in on Sun morn 9.00; he didn’t eat all day and then Mon we rang to see if he had a good night at 10 and was told op was cancelled and to bring him home. When he got home he was ill so we took him back and was told he had no food, two enemas and he was having bowel spasms. He lost 7lbs over night. His operation was changed to a week later; he then came through the op but suffered bleeding in the early hour. Since then we got a call to go straight through to see Dr who said he was really poorly.

While he was on the high dependency unit he was ok(ish) but then he was taken down to a normal ward later where we think he has deteriorated. We are concerned he has been put on this ward too early. He is holding his own at the moment but we feel the one-on-one care would have been better for him. He can’t reach for a drink by himself and can’t attract attention to him self. I know they have a buzzer but when I visited the buzzer was not in his reach! And also he tried to get his water and knocked it over and there was no one to see that!
