"Nobody is listening or getting back to me. All this waiting time, absolutely shocking"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / General Surgery

(as the patient),

In September I had a barium enema following a referral to the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by my GP. When the results came back my GP was unable to say what further treatment would be given and referred me back to the consultant at the hospital and was told I need a colonoscopy.

Since then I have been waiting to find out when the colonoscopy will be carried out, also to know exactly what the barium enema showed.

I phoned the hospital in December when I was told I was on the ‘urgent’ list. Its 5 months since I was seen in September and I’m still waiting – if that’s what happens to urgent cases how long do non-urgent cases have to wait?

I was told the consultant was off sick – is there just one consultant? I was also told a nurse needs to be present when a colonoscopy is conducted but there is a shortage of nurses.

Nobody is listening or getting back to me. All this waiting time, absolutely shocking.

Response from Linda Oldroyd, Nurse Consultant, Person Centred Care, NHS Grampian

Dear patient

I can completely understand your frustration at this situation. It should not be so difficult to at least find out your results and where you are on the waiting list. If you could contact me with your details I will try to find out more information for you. You can do this by calling me on 01224 558449 or by emailing me at loldroyd@nhs.net

Uncertainty is a great cause of anxiety and I apologise for the situation you have found yourself in.

Your GP should be able to give you the results of your barium enema and make enquiries on your behalf, however we should try to do more to keep people informed about impending diagnostics and treatment so that folks like yourself are not left feeling that no one is listening to you.

Kind regards
