"poor care & communication"

About: Leicester General Hospital

My husband was admitted with severe abdominal pain and his care was shocking at times. Some of the staff were brilliant but the rest were appalling. There seemed to be a complete lack of hand hygiene, I didn't see a single member of staff use the alcohol gel (even when administering iv fluids) and they did not clean his canula before use. He scored a 4 on the EWS but didn't get a doctor review until over an hour later when he collapsed on the toilet floor. He continued to score 4 but stayed on 4 hourly obs. He had tests done but didn't know why he was having them and was not informed of the results. He started to get very confused (he's only 31 and normally completely appropriate) yet no one seemed to take it seriously. A nurse even wrote incorrect information on his obs chart, scoring his pain as 0 when he'd reported that it was a 4. The worst thing was the poor communication, half the time he had no idea what he was waiting for or what the plan was. I must stress that this wasn't all staff. There was a lovely junior doctor and a couple of fantastic nurses but the rest really let the team down. I'm a nurse myself and I know how busy and stressful some days can be but there is no excuse for such poor standards of care. He ended up self discharging and going to the Gp who informed him that his liver function was poor and there were significant changes on his USS, which he had no idea about. He has commented himself on here (Chris) but he was still very confused when he did it and it doesn't make a lot of sense.

Dear reviewer, We are sincerely sorry to hear about your husband's experience at the General. We have responded to Chris's comment today and given him the contact details of our Urology Matron, Julia Todd, who would like to investigate his case to ensure our service is improved. Kind regards, Communications team, Leicester's Hospitals
