"How trainee dentist should not be allowed to do extractions"

About: Dundee Dental Hospital / Dental Services

(as the patient),

I had a back tooth removed. It left a massive hole in my gum, didn't even stitch it. I was left in agony after an hour. 2 weeks later, I spat out the the remains of the tooth, as wasn't took out completely.

Dear llm

We are sorry to learn that you have not had a positive experience during a recent visit to Dundee Dental Hospital and that you were left in pain. Following the extraction, you should have received a patient information leaflet which provides further information about what to expect following an extraction and a telephone number for you to contact if you have any ongoing concerns. I wish to apologise if this was not given to you at the time. Dundee Dental Hospital is a teaching hospital and a large number of patients are treated by the dental students in Dundee every year. The dental students are all supervised by qualified clinicians and their clinical competencies are signed off during this process. The dental students are not permitted to carry out any clinical treatments that they do not have the clinical skills to undertake. If the dental students fail to achieve the clinical competencies required by the General Dental Council, they are not permitted to proceed with their training.

Patient safety and a providing a positive patient experience across all our services is extremely important to us and this includes our teaching facility at Dundee Dental Hospital. I would therefore urge you to contact Joanne Cameron, Clinical Services Manager for Dundee Dental Hospital on 01382 425791 to discuss you concerns further. It is extremely important that we learn from any negative patient experience.

Kind regards.

Alison Moss
