"Is it all good at the RVI?"

My dad was admitted with fractured to his pelvic. I stayed with him for 18 days and night. At times it was made difficult for me to stay with him although they agreed, unfortunately my dad did not speak English and suffered from dementia and I knew I could help by talking to him in his language. Some of the nurses were very kind and caring but some were heart and soulless. i had to stop a few of them giving my dad the wrong dosage of medication. They didn't like being told that they were wrong and that that's not what the doctor had said. I was threatened to be removed out of the hospital because one or some of the nurses told the ward sister that I was intimidating. They felt intimidated because I brought their mistake to the attention of the sister, they didn't like it and I didn't care that they didn't like it, it was my dad that they were making mistake on and I didn't want it to go wrong. At the weekends the main doctors and nurses had the weekend off so the ward were ran by standby nurses with little experience and doctors were limited. It was as though they expected the patients illness would go away for the weekend and then come back on the Monday. My dad died 18 days later with injury to kidney, bronco nomonia frailty he was 95. RVI has a good name but there are many major issues and I am sure many mistakes are being made which people don't report and the hospital gets away with.

Thank you very much for the time taken to record your feedback on the NHS choices website regarding the care and treatment afforded to your Father whilst an inpatient on the Orthopaedics ward at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. Please accept our condolences on the sad loss of your Father. In response to your review, please be assured that we do welcome and appreciate the involvement of family and friends in the care of the patient wherever possible and understand the importance of this to family members and patients. However, we do also have to ensure the privacy and dignity of other patients on the ward at all times so visitors may be asked to leave the clinical area at some points in the day. We would also wish to assure you that the staffing levels on wards are closely monitored at all times to ensure a safe and appropriate level of nursing and medical care regardless of the day of the week. As you correctly note there are less nursing staff on the ward over the weekend, but this is appropriate in both numbers and experience to professionally care for and manage patients on the ward over the weekend period.
