"My son's experience at Barnsley DGH"

About: Barnsley Hospital / Maxillo-Facial surgery

(as a relative),

Best bits:

My son suffered an orbital floor fracture through an accident. The staff in the Maxillo-facial unit were very caring, supportive and sympathetic towards him. They explained in layman terms to him about his injury, concerns and possible treatment. We returned on three occasions and each time the staff involved were superb. Within these visits staff telephone to alter appointment dates/times but although I answered the call they would not divulge information and asked to speak to my son; very professional and confidential.

Worst bits:

The second visit took quite a while before he saw someone although there were 3 consultants on at the time it was very busy, we waited almost an hour before being seen. We then had to wait again for our next appointment date to be given as staff ended up pre-occupied by trying to sort out workmen with signs and door labels. (The person who had ordered the job was actually off duty that day and no-one else knew what needed to be done exactly) at one point 3 staff were taken away from their own jobs and patients including my son.

The third appointment he was seen within 10 minutes from arriving and thankfully my son was discharged.

What should change?

Nothing should change with regard to the department staff.

BUT

Barnsley DGH you really need a larger car park. It's a complete nightmare to park. Have an attendant to point out spaces when available, it is almost impossible to manoeuvre in such tight spaces. This adds tension and causes annoyance towards other motorists. People are pre-occupied enough about treatments, let alone wondering if they will be able to park or not.
