"Miscarriage experience"

About: Victoria Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

I had experienced some spotting and my GP arranged for me to have a scan at the early pregnancy unit. I went for the scan with my Husband on a Friday, at the scan the technician confirmed that she could see the baby in the right position, but she could not detect a heart beat. She was able to confirm that the baby was 9 weeks old.

The technician and all the nurses I saw were so supportive and kind. They explained everything really slowly and gave my husband and I time alone in a room to talk. They were able to keep us private and even showed us out of the unit through a back door so I didn't need to walk through the entrance with the other pregnant mums. They asked me if I wanted a photograph of the baby, at the time I was so upset I couldn't really look at the picture, but now its a week later and I am so pleased I have this picture to remember our baby.

Everyone we met was so kind, understanding and considerate. I couldn't have asked for everyone to do anything else. I wanted to arrange for the treatment I needed as soon as possible, and the nurse was able to arrange for me to come in on Monday to have the medical management.

I was given my own room for the whole day and all the nurses that looked after me were so kind. It was a horrible experience, I am so sad to have lost our baby, but I couldn't have asked for any better treatment. Everyone helped to make such a awful experience so much less painful.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone at the EP unit and ward 32. thank you for your kindness.

Dear jhngs

Thank you for taking the time to share something so personal and painful with us, this takes alot of courage. May I extend my condolences on your sad loss. Dealing with such sensitive issues is never easy and yet we know that when it is done well it makes such a differnece to the people concerned. It sounds like the whole team got it just right in terms of the balance between privacy and support and the compassionate way in which they dealt with you and your husband. I will make sure your post is shared with the teams, which will serve to re iterate the value of compassionate care.

Thank you once again for sharing this with us. Wishing you well for the future.

Louise Ewing
