I was admitted with chest pains, and remained in the A&E department for 12 hours before being moved to a ward until discharge at 8 pm. During this time my observations caused me to be concerned at the lack of quality care many of the nursing staff gave to patients including myself. I had no idea who was who, what the different uniforms defined. The senior nursing staff (of whom there seemed to be many) never came near me. Lots of activity, staff discussing their private lives with one another. Nobody even told me where the toilets were. Nurses providing me with treatment during my stay never introduced themselves. Doctors did. I was given an ECG by a male nurse. I wasn't asked if this was acceptable to me. The little information I was given, did not materialize, (I was supposed to have been moved to an assessment ward following my treatment) due I was told much later,to test results going astray. During my stay I was given 3 drinks of cold weak tea, by a man in a yellow jumper, who wandered around the cubicles. No idea who he was. Also a dreadful stale sandwich, which was complimentry! Then I was asked to complete a questionnaire about the department by the same man. There seemed to be a lack of respect for patients dignity. At 5.30 pm a porter informed me I was being moved to a ward. I was amazed that this man had such authority. I felt totally institutionalized devoid of all my personality during the whole experience. There are many shortcomings which need to be addressed. I hope nobody else has a similar experience.
