"From apprehension to appreciation"

About: Leicester General Hospital

Having arrived at ward 17 for elective kidney surgery on 10 th February in a very apprehensive mindset I was met by a friendly receptionist who was obviously expecting me as she greeted me with the words"it's Michael isn't it". She then led me down the ward and showed me to my bed. A very friendly nurse then came and after introducing herself went through the admission procedure. Later a Proffessor and 2 other surgeons arrived and described what the procedure entailed in detail ,the possible snags and the likely outcome and when it would be taling place. The preparation was detailed and carried out with complete professionalism if sometimes repetitive.when taken to theatre the porters and my nurse were jovial and attempting to allay my fears. After the operation I was met by my reassuring nurse and once back on the ward the same level of concern was shown. The following day this excellent care continued and more of a rapport was established with all levels of staff. The surgeons returned and explained fully what had been achieved and the nursing staff were constantly checking stats and making sure I was comfortable. The sister was very visible and once learned my sense of humour was engaging in banter throughout my stay. When concern was shown over a slight impediment to my recovery a plan was immediately put in place and the problem diffused. The following day my discharge was well planned and explained and I was Prepared for home. Unable to say my thanks to all the staff treating me due to shift patterns I would thank all of them now and say that if it was a hotel I would like to return. The whole experience can be summed up by my title "from apprehension to appreciation" thank you all.
