Consulting Ophthalmologist did not introduce himself by name or status. I don't believe he was the gentleman stated in my appointment. He was a gentleman with very poor interpersonal skills. What little he did say was also indistinct. I found out his name subsequently from reception. He does not appear on the Ophthalmology Department's Staff list website!! Another communication blunder? I found him very uncommunicative. No explanation of what procedure was being carried out and why. Results were stated in a monosyllabic short statement without further explanation or checking whether I understood or had any questions. I was discharged with little or minimal information other than to contact the hospital again if I experienced further problems. It is difficult to ask what is happening when your head and chin are fixed into a eye scanning machine! Communication with the patient is essential and the professional needs to be far more proactive in this regard. The nurses and ancillary staff who completed the initial tasks before I saw the ophthalmologist were, however, excellent.
