"Wards 11, 31 and HDU"

About: Leicester General Hospital

I was admitted to the hospital for a radical hysterectomy on 31st January. From the moment I was admitted, the staff on ward 11 were very helpful and kind. There were some initial complications, but the consultant and anesthetist were extremely helpful. After the op there were some complications that meant I had to spend time in the high dependency unit. This was quite daunting and upsetting for both my family and myself. I cannot praise a couple of the staff on that ward enough. This was, however, also the first time I realised that the recovery is very much dependent upon the people who are looking after a patient. A couple of more grumpy staff can make a patient feel quite isolated. I was pleased to move to ward 31 because it felt like a step closer to leaving. The initial day care team that I had on this ward were great. One nurse in particular made all the difference to my recovery. They were caring, considerate, understanding and more than anything treated me as a human, not just another patient number. These people were such a credit to the hospital. Unfortunately, the day shift on the last day I was at the hospital were not so great, but I left that day anyway. The moral of this review - there are staff at the hospital that prove that nursing and caring really is a vocation and not something that can simply be learned. The amazing were really amazing and the jobsworths were just there for a wage. That all said, I am home and on the road to recovery and every single person at the General played a role in getting me here.

Response from Leicester General Hospital

Dear Reviewer Thank you so much for your lovely comments. It isn’t much fun coming to hospital but we do try and make it as comfortable possible. A positive atmosphere can make such a difference to our patients. With the exception of you last day in hospital, it seems that your experience at three different departments of the General is just the experience we aim to provide and reflects our values perfectly. Thank you again for you kind words – we hope you are making a good recovery. Sincerely Rachel Overfield Chief Nurse Leicester’s Hospitals
