"Below Standard Treatment"

About: Queen Alexandra Hospital

I have unfortunately had dealings with this department several times since 2012. On each occasion the staff on ward D7 have been unfriendly & rude & appear to have no people skills whatsoever. On my first visit when feeling extremely unwell & after my GP had requested a single room was told "you get what you are given" On my second visit my watch seemingly disappeared whilst I was in surgery, it has never been found! On my third visit my belongings were searched, my handbag removed, pain relief refused & security called when I complained. I was diagnosed with bladder cancer in November 2012, have had no further checks & still have an indwelling catheter after 3 years despite many requests to have this problem dealt with. I was offered an appointment in June 2014 after complaining through PALS however the appointment was issued by telephone with only 3 days notice, this unfortunately was not a suitable appointment & I had to refuse it. I was then treated to a tirade of verbal abuse by a secretary & have not had an appointment since. I have made several complaints via PALS who either do not answer at all or an Ursula Ward answers & only answers the questions she sees fit & ignores any pertinent questions. To leave a patient for three years without a solution is at best reprehensible if not downright negligent. By GP tried to circumvent the system by referring me to St Richards however a consultant who I saw works at both hospitals, I was told that they saw no merit in treating me at St Richards & would see me in Portsmouth, that was at beginning of October 2014 & 5 months later I have heard nothing. The complaints system seems to have little or no authority to do anything & indeed is hardly fit for purpose. To get any sort of treatment what is one to do, go to the papers, write to ones MP or just bite the bullet & go private. Even the latter solution has its pitfalls as surprisingly the majority of urologists at the Spire are also those who work at Q.A. Thoroughly disappointed & still in desperate need of treatment.

Thank you for writing in. We are very sorry to read of your concerns and are deeply dissapointed to learn of your dissatisfaction towards the Complaints and PALS system. We would truly appreciate the opportunity to look into this further for you and would be grateful if you would email us on PHT.Complaints@porthosp.nhs.uk. Kindest Regards Leanne Complaints Officer
