On the Friday I wasn’t feeling well then on the Saturday I tried to go out shopping but I was out of breath by the time I got to the end of my road. My son came over and he called my GP. Because it was Saturday and the practice was closed he had an automated message to call 111.

I was a bit out of it but apparently my son spoke to some doctors on the phone. On Sunday two doctors arrived and told me I had pneumonia. I don’t know who called the ambulance but within the hour I was at St Georges Hospital. At 12. 00 I had an assessment and I was then in hospital for a week.

The staff were brilliant, the only thing I can find fault with is the hospital on a weekend. I was told the following Friday that I could be discharged that day but nothing happened.

On Saturday they said the only doctor on was an on call doctor. Finally on Sunday I saw a doctor who discharged me but because it was Sunday it was a hard job to get the tablets I needed to take at home.

On the news they go on about “bed blocking” but the NHS could have quite easily chucked me on Friday but because it was the weekend I ended up being in hospital 2 extra days after they said I could go home. To me this is a waste of resources. I am not criticising the staff, I had brilliant care, but I am criticising the system on a weekend.
