"My surgery was cancelled due to staff shortages in theatre"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Neurosurgery (Brain and Spinal Surgery)

(as the patient),

I went for an EMG test for my nerve & muscle damage on my hand in march 2014 with Dr Forster. He was kind, understanding and explained the test in full detail. About 2 months after the test I received a phone call from the consultant surgeon who advised me I would need surgery as I have condition called " ulnar nerve trapment syndrome" in January this year I was told that an appointment was available for surgery early Feb and that a letter would be sent out to confirm the date & time of surgery. This morning I phoned the consultant surgeon's secretary (whom I now feel I know after numerous telephone conversations and she has been polite, helpful and understanding) and I was told that I wasn't on the surgery list, due to the fact that my surgery had been cancelled due to staff shortages in theatre! No alternate date was given to me or indeed notification of the cancellation. Now approaching 1 year on from diagnosis and still waiting for treatment on my deteriating hand! I can't lift or carry anything. I am not able to work and don't receive ANY benefits! ! I need surgery ASAP

Response from Linda Oldroyd, Nurse Consultant, Person Centred Care, NHS Grampian

Dear patient

I would be most grateful if you would get in touch with me directly. If I have your name and date of birth I can look in to the details of your case and hopefully resolve this situation for you. Please email me at loldroyd@nhs.net or call me on 01224 558449

I am glad that our staff have been polite in their dealings with you. This is as it should be. However, even better if you had been given the information you needed about the rescheduling of your appointment.
