"My fathers care in C2"

About: Rotherham Hospital / General medicine

(as a relative),

After having a stroke my father was taken to Rotherham resus, and after spending a night in B1 he was finally transferred to the stroke unit (C2) after a bed became available. Whilst in this ward I became concerned about the care he was receiving, due to his confused state I felt that we as a family should have been updated a lot more about any results from the many cognitive tests, urine samples and blood results etc.

I repeatedly had to ask members of staff as they weren't forthcoming in giving us the information and appeared to just leave it to my father to tell us, and he obviously struggled with this. When I did ask for some BM results I was made to feel that I had no right to ask.

I also asked a nurse if they could administer his current meds as my father couldn't do this himself (after having a stroke). The nurse rolled their eyes as though this was way too much trouble.

In B1 we were told that my father was at high risk of another stroke so had to stay for observation, my concern is that the nurses didn't appear to make any observations to any patients and my father actually had to alert them (at their station) to a gentleman that looked as though he was choking. I also have to mention that the patient in the next bed had 'Hourly obs' wrote above his bed, in the 2hrs+ I was there nobody came to do any 'obs'. This didn't fill me with confidence.
