"Marvelous Maternity!"

About: Kingston Hospital

After arriving at the hospital expecting a natural birth and to be out within 24 hours only to require an emergency C section and a week long hospital stay I cannot say enough good things about the staff at Kingston maternity. Like most things NHS the level of care I think depends on your need for care. Whilst in the labor ward we felt a bit like we were left to muddle along by ourselves, this was probably fairly true as you have to transition through that stage. As soon as we reached the birthing suit the midwives were fantastic.Friendly and caring whilst keeping a keen eye on the process. As soon as anything out of the ordinary occurs the level of care skyrockets. Post epidural after a jump in fetal heart rate we were under almost constant supervision of at least 1 and sometimes 3 consultants. At one point there were 10 members of staff in the room. At all points we were informed of what was happening and assured that things were under control. After a few hours when an emergency c section was needed a slick machine kicked into gear and we were in theater within 10 minutes. The staff were not only efficient and professional but also personable. A special mention here needs to go to our young anesthetist who went out of his way to put us at ease. After a successful birth our daughter needed to spend 3 nights in neonatal where again the level of care and communication with the parents was superb. The nurses were lovely and we felt like our child was in the best possible hands. When she was released back into our care the level of care dipped slightly, as too did the need for the care. However, when needed the unit was superb. Thank you to the staff of the maternity unit for their fantastic work and care. If we have another child we would definitely choose Kingston again. The only downside is the crazy parking situation, both the lack of space and the cost (although again this was mitigated when we needed increased care). Thank you Kingston maternity!
