"A&E / Eye Clinic"

About: Sandwell General Hospital

I have visited A&E for myself and also with my elderly mother. The staff generate an atmosphere of them and us. A climate of subordination so patients are very apprehensive to ask or approach staff for anything but to sit there like naughty children not quite sure what wrong they have done. The nurses have an attitude problem like they are providing a service for free but they are paid wages and the patient is a charity case. Some doctors are very good but very rare but most have a real chip on their shoulders thinking the patient is some kind of peasant under examination. My mother has visited the eye clinic for cataract surgery , when I tried to ask questions a wall of silence was put up. The nurses that initially assess the patients are very rude and walk around with a real attitude and refuse to make eye contact and do their best to ignore the patients. Where is the 1st class NHS everyone talks about and all these hardworking caring doctors and nurses, I will be the first there.

I am sorry to hear about your experience. We expect our staff to live up to our care promises and treat patients and families with care and dignity. We would be happy to look into this further to see how we can improve our services. Please email details to our Patient Advice and Liaison Service via swb-tr.pals@nhs.net so that we can investigate.
