"Barnsley District General - Chemo Unit, Ward 24"

About: Barnsley Hospital / Clinical haematology

(as the patient),

My husband who has Leukaemia lymphoma received the care, respect, friendliness of all staff on the chemo unit, Ward 24, from Dr Ng/ Dr Chan down to the cleaning and tea ladies. You are never made to feel that you are wasting their time however busy they are.

In my opinion the four bedded room is used as emergency beds for all the hospital and often not knowing when admitted what’s wrong. Often patients are mixed and I think in that people who are on chemo should not be put with these people. My husband has no immune system left, an infection could be what takes his life but when there is not a single room free he has to be put with other patients! This should be stopped!

The four bedded room on Ward 24 leaves 8 rooms (single) for chemo patients which is not a lot of beds as chemo patients have often to be admitted at short notice for blood transfusions or infections as this is often life threatening! My husband also finds a lot of people talking, very tiring in his weariness when his blood is low, others like patients are often too tired also. But other patients who should be on other wards do not understand how poorly they are. Is it too much to ask that out of a hospital so large just 4 beds could be left along with the rest of ward 24 for chemo patients only! Also the wonderful nurses are often very busy with their own patients who really do rely and need them.

The list to thank people would be too long on ward 24. They go the extra mile on every shift! I can't praise them enough and if I could I would give them all a medal.
