I had been prescribed blood pressure medication in September 08 after 24 hour monitoring. A routine pre op check had shown it to be high. I felt it was on the low end of the scale and was not happy at the prospect of being on medication for life. A check at a different doctor (a chap I worked with) showed my blood pressure still to be high and he advised me to see my GP again. I did this and this time it was suggested I came off the medication as they were not working and to establish whether I do have high blood pressure. So I bought a pressure testing kit and have been monitoring at home. I am due to go and follow up next week. This approach pleased me because it fits with my view of the situation. I felt the medication had been offered too quickly without enough investigation. If it shows I now do have high blood pressure I feel more confident that the diagnosis will be correct and confident to ask for investigations into causes as I have lost weight, taken more exercise, cut down in alcohol in the past year and my blood pressure has not sorted. Also if it proves not to be high enough to warrant medication it will have saved the NHS money by taking this approach!
