"Painful to say the least!"

I have never had any dental treatment and was therefore very nervous about having my wisdom tooth removed, after speaking to the consultant in August 2014 he seemed very positive and reassured me about the whole procedure. I was then seen in January 2015, by a member of the consultant's team. I arrived early for my appointment and was greeted by a very nice nurse who took me into a room told me what to expect both during and pos operative. I was then called into the surgery and it wasn't until the procedure was over that I actually had time to reminisce on it all. It was meant to be a "surgical" procedure. The tray was set out with the sterile blue drapes and all the instruments laid on top, as far as I was concerned you were meant to wait until the patient was actually in the chair before opening sterile instruments for a surgical. The consultant had a pair of what looked like black jeans with a creased scrub top on, the dental nurse had her scrubs on with a cardigan on top. No mask, no goggles, no visor and her surgical gloves were not on properly. The other nurse who was in the room also had scrubs on with a cardigan on top, also to mention she was standing beside the window coughing with her gloves on, put her hand to her mouth, took her glove off, soother in her mouth then put the same glove back on! I think these circumstances are far less than acceptable for a clinical surgical "sterile" area. After the extraction I was given pack to bite on, non to take home with me just advised to bite on a wet hanky if bleeding started and told the dentist didnt want to see me again. Crazy! I didn't feel any pain throughout the procedure and was glad to be getting rid of the tooth. From the night it was done and 3 days onwards I have had raging toothache ever since. I have been to the dentist twice to have it dressed and rinsed and given a course of antibiotics due to infection that was starting to spread across my throat. I am left with facial bruising, unable to open my mouth more than the first third and constant crackling in my ear. I am somewhat extremely unhappy with the whole situation. Cleanliness and patient care seems to have gone out the window.

I am aslo extremely sorry that the care and the practice of the team in Berwick fell way short of your expectations. I have immediatley forwarded your concerns to senior managers and clinicians within the service, but while your post remains anonymous it is difficult to investifate any further.
