"Overwhelmed staff System creaking Still awaiting..."

About: Queen Alexandra Hospital

I was admitted by ambulance at around 7am on July 28th 2014 having been seen by a 111 Dr. I was in pain as I had been unable to urinate since 3.pm the previous day. Even at that time the A&E could not cope and I was on a trolley in the corridor until around 1pm when I was seen by a Dr, was given scan and blood tests and offered paracetamols. Nothing was done until around 9pm after a sympathetic nurse called 2 urology Drs to see me who arranged catheterisation and admission to Urology department around midnight. I was discharged the following day with a catheter fitted after being seen on the ward rounds. I received a letter on 8th August confirming I was on the surgery waiting list but warning that it could take 18 weeks. I was readmitted to Urology on 31st August in pain with a blocked catheter at around midnight having been directed to the out of hours GP by the 111 Dr. The department which was closed to admissions was finally able to deal with me and take me in as the Surgical Assessment Unit did not have the equipment for 2 way catheterisation which prolonged my agony. I remained in the department for 3 days being flushed through and received excellent care and attention. I was discharged with a catheter fitted into the care of a District Nurse. In September and October I returned for outpatients appointments with the Consultant, a Urodynamic test and Cystoscopy. On 15th October I received my pre-op assessment and was told that my operation would be within the next 2 weeks. On that same day I had to be washed out and recatheterised in Urology as my catheter had blocked with blood clots. The staff at all times were helpful and sympathetic. I have made further enquiries in November, December and January about when I might be operated on but could not be given a date. In the meantime I have had to call out my district nurse to deal with blood clots blocking the catheter. This morning I was advised that although no date for an operation was available it would possibly be late February or March before I am called. I fear that in March I will be given another possible date. The average waiting time for this operation (TURP) shown on the hospital website is 12 weeks. I am still waiting after 23 weeks and if I am seen at the end of February I will have been on the waiting list for 30 weeks. In contrast, I was also called for a colonoscopy and the removal of a polyp in the Coleorectal Department in November which was dealt with speedily and with excellent care from everyone concerned.
