"Inefficient X-ray Department"

About: Medway Maritime Hospital

I attended for an X-ray prior to an outpatient appointment on 7/1/15. On arrival at 10.30 I was informed that the waiting time was an hour and a half. How can a department be running 90 minutes late by 10,30 in the morning? When called to a sub-waiting area there followed another 30 minute wait, during which it was extremely interesting to watch the lack of impetus from radiographers who seemed to show know interest in trying to reduce the delays and ambled about from examination rooms to processing, leaving the X-ray room empty, (thus adding to the delays, especially when 'repeats' were required). The radiographers, apart from a student, looked unprofessional, wearing theatre scrub tops, with no proper tunics in sight. As a retired Superintendent Radiographer (at another Trust) it is my opinion that the staff of this department needs lessons in good working practice. I have stated 'Don't Know' as the department visited because X-ray (or Imaging or Radiology) are not included in your drop-down list - please rectify!

Thank you for telling us about your experience. We were seeing a high number of patients on 7 January. The majority of patients reported to the department from 8am in a continuous stream which resulted in the 90 minute delay you mention. Being a walk-in service, we have little control of the number of patients who wish to wait when informed of the wait time. The department is open between 8am and 4pm and at times of high demand, patients would be advised of potentially quieter times to return if they do not wish to wait. Due to the lack of waiting space we do operate with two waiting areas which is why patients are sometimes moved from one area to another. Your comments about the dropdown menu will be shared with the NHS Choices team who manage the national website. Lesley Lloyd Head of Imaging
