"Mixed feelings about care"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Taken to ESH with what turned out to be a very badly broken right ankle.

I feel that the ED can learn from the staff in the day surgery department at the hospital as the 2 are like night and day.

First the ED wasn't sat around a long time in fact it is the quickest I have ever been through the ED. But the doctor dealing with me never spent more than 30 seconds talking to me at no point was I ever shown the x ray of my broken ankle or explained what was going to be the next step until a surgeon arrived and said they where going to plaster and re x ray to see if an operation was needed.

Nurses though where great explained everything and always seemed happy. Turned out I needed an operation and was told I could go home and come back in the morning but at no point was I asked if I was in any pain did I need anything to the doctors I seemed just a number and on to the next one.

All this is in contrast to the day surgery/admissions the nurses and staff down there and up on the ward are nothing but awesome and should all be held up as an example to the rest of the hospital as how things should be done.

Nothing is ever to much trouble for them they keep you informed and up to date on everything that is going on and have always got time to stop and have a chat.

Dear polo1664

I'm glad to hear you were happy with your treatment in our day surgery unit but I would like to look into the points you raised about areas of your care in the ED. If you would like to get in touch with me and give me some details I can pass them onto the ED team. I have already passed your feedback on to them so they are aware of it and can share it amongst their staff.

Kind regards

Tasha
