Upon making an appointment with the Gloucestershire Hospital for a coil fitting, I was first referred back to Cheltenham General Hospital as it was closer and beneficial for me. I was told by the nurses that I needed to take the mini-pill for a few weeks before getting the coil as a precaution and that i wouldn't need further tests or appointments, just to turn up for my coil fitting in Cheltenham and it would be fine. However, at least three of my appointments were continually cancelled, due to doctors not being present on the day, although the receptionist was sure that there would be doctors on those days. Once i finally turned up to my appointment, I was told that i couldn't receive the coil until i had further blood tests and swabs to double check, and a different mini-pill to take. After confiding to the doctor that the last mini-pill gave me headaches and an upset stomach I was firmly told that i couldn't have felt such symptoms as they don't happen. The doctor disregarded my feelings and my symptoms completely. Also, upon being asked whether I had had unprotected sex with my last long-term boyfriend, after saying no, the doctor looked at me in a condescending way and patronizingly asked, 'really? are you sure? that's impressive.' I did not ask for the doctor to make snide comments about my personal sex life. I am nearly 20 years of age and the doctor continued to make patronizing comments and made me feel extremely uncomfortable. She continued to talk down to me and make me feel ashamed for wanting to protect myself and make a decision to get the coil. I felt extremely messed around and very upset that I was dealt with in this manor. Further comments were made that particularly upset me, in this case, i do not wish to make any further appointments regarding sexual health and contraception with Cheltenham General Hospital. I began to make appointments in October 2014 for the coil fitting, after being messed around, cancelled on and told different things it is now January 2015 and i am yet to be fitted with the coil. I would much prefer to take my appointments elsewhere where I won't be left feeling uncomfortable, ashamed and not listened to. I would hate for others, especially those younger than myself to feel like they can confide in a doctor and yet be let down and feel patronized.
"A huge lack of disregard and care."
