"Still worried"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Gynaecology (Ward 32)

(as the patient),

Was referred by my gp to gynecology in the RAH for a pelvic scan as he thought I may have ovarian cysts.

Waited 2 hours to be taken by a doctor who wasn't the person I was waiting for. When the doctor read my letter they sighed & said they were sick of gps referring patients who didn't have gynecological issues. I was told that because I was on the depo jag this couldn't be the case & I couldn't get a scan so late. I made the doctor aware that I was worried in case it was a serious problem like cysts or ovarian cancer. The doctor laughed and told me getting ovarian cancer at my age was as rare as hens teeth so I've to wait another month or so for a scan. Rude, horrible, uncaring doctor. Left the hospital crying as this problem has been going on for over a year.

Dear Rowram

I am disturbed to hear this. I assure you and all readers of Patient Opinion that such behaviours are not acceptable to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. On a personal note, I am so sorry that you had such an experience and that you left one of our hospitals in tears.

To respond more fully, it would be helpful to get some further details from you about your experience. If you feel able, would you please contact me directly on niall.mcgrogan@ggc.scot.nhs.uk. I would be keen to discuss with you how we might take this further but assure you I would only do so in a way that you felt comfortable with.

There is also a brilliant organisation called PASS ( the Patient Advice and Support Service) which is independent of the NHS, fully impartial, free and is hosted by the Citizens Advice Bureaux. PASS can help people make a complaint or provide support in giving further feedback. You can contact PASS by phone on 0141 775 3220, or via any Citizens Advice Bureau.

In the meantime, my thoughts are with you.

Yours sincerely,

Niall McGrogan
