"I would like to be at the mercy of this hospital"

About: Basildon University Hospital

My 93 year old aunt was admitted by ambulance with suspected broken hip. 8 hours in A And E on a draughty corridor. Admitted to ward 8 hours after ambulance team admitted her. Morphine given 4 hours after arrival, then 15 minutes later a different doctor came with syringe. When questioned by us what was he doing, he said giving her morphine. We stated she had only just been given that drug, he said it wasn't registered on her notes. Thank god we were there! Admitted to ward for hip surgery she was without food for 30 hours and then the surgery was cancelled until the next day! Patients are left to defocate in the bed as not enough staff to get a bedpan. Dignity is not high on the priority list. One carer to four high dependency patients. My aunt was treated like she had dementia, she doesn't. If you leave someone without food for 30 hours they will of course hallucinate. I was told she was not an emergency. No further pain relief other than paracetamol (only given on request) was given. Good God what has this country come to. 93 years old and left in what can only be described as a war zone.
