"Wave goodbye to basic rights/staff common..."

About: Addenbrooke's Hospital

On behalf of my nan - who is 90 years old. Admitted suffering with renal infection diarrhoea and after having a fall. What do you give her then - laxatives?? Really? How do think the outcome of that went? You can guess what happened, made worse by the fact that the toilet door is constantly half blocked by a bin put there to hold the main doors open. Dignity out the window. We have moved the bin several times so she can get in easier (she really needs help getting there or a walking frame), but when she has needed to go and buzzed no one there to help. Other patients have said they wanted to help but couldn't get up themselves. For some reason it is always dark in the ward because they turn the lights off at every opportunity. If they put that wasted effort into reading notes, that would be a start. At 2.30pm it feels like 9.00pm. Some nurses seem to have trouble with basic English and seem annoyed with my nan for not understanding them - I do not - and I do not have hearing aids. Although put on a liver ward - she had renal problems, so you would have thought they would be making sure she is taking in fluids and eating (again basic human rights) but no. They obviously think you can get better on air as nobody has noticed she had not been eating or drinking. She was misdiagnosed with cancer last year and was preparing herself for death. We did not create a massive fuss on the understanding they did thorough tests and looked after her. This is not looking after her. She needs to go into geriatric ward where they were, for a short time, doing just that. In C4 though - no way. What an absolutely diabolical way to be treated - they should be ashamed of themselves.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your Grandmother's recent experiences at Addenbrooke's Hospital. I am very sorry to learn that the care provided has not been of the standard you expect and that we would wish to provide. If you would like us to look into the issues you have raised and provide an individual response, I would be grateful if you could contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 01223 216756 or pals@addenbrookes.nhs.uk. In the meantime, I will pass your comments to the ward so that the staff are aware of your concerns and appropriate action can be taken. Complaints and PALS Manager
