"Attentive and comfortable care for my son on AEC ward"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / General medicine

(as a relative),

My 17 year old son was admitted to this ward having been diagnosed with suspected meningitis. As anyone can imagine - a very worrying time.

He was allocated a nurse on arrival who was able to calm him down and explain what was happening. When I arrived I met the nurse who took me straight to my son explaining everything to me. My son stayed in this ward for 3 days before being discharged.

Throughout his stay all the nurses were unbelievably attentive not just to him but to all the patients. I stayed each day from 8am until 10pm and we were kept fully informed by the nurses. He was seen very quickly after admission by a doctor - this was very thorough. Days 2 and 3 he was allocated another nurse who was just as attentive and who without he would not have had the lumber puncture he needed for the diagnoses.

I have myself been a private inpatient in the past and the level of service and expertise I have experienced in the last 3 days by all the staff in this ward is no different. Thankfully my son has been discharged and I cannot thank the nurses and consultants enough for making his short stay as comfortable as it was. Too many people only put pen to paper when they want to complain and not enough when thanks are due. We have had such a good experience it is only right that I take time to tell you how good this department is.

Although we have passed on our thanks to the staff in person when we left, I hope that this story will be read by senior managers who will themselves personally cascade it back to the ward. Many thanks to you all.
