"A&E and Nelson Ward"

About: Medway Maritime Hospital

A&E was backed up with no room ,cubicles full and with others on beds and chairs in the way we had to be moved on a regular bases to allow staff to gain access etc. was examined with a screen around me as no cubicles I was told I would be admitted but there were no beds at present. eventually taken to observation ward waiting for a bed to become free. I was put into Nelson ward approx. 14.5 hours after being admitted . The care and dedication of the staff can not be faulted they are working under intense pressure in not ideal surroundings and with some equipment not up to standard. How A&E work under those conditions is amazing. I can not understand why this Hospital is marked down all the time if it is obvious to me that the problem lies in the infrastructure and facilities why can't this be seen by the powers to be and acknowledged. In these days of measuring everything and giving them targets you could save a massive amount of time and energy by giving the staff the equipment and room they need to work . On another note I visited a couple of weeks ago for eye test I was in a traffic jam from the top road all the way into the hospital when I got by the car parking which was full the attendant said it was gridlocked and would have to wait for space to become free this must causes massive problems when you consider there are ambulance, busses, staff and patients all being late. How can a major hospital have access roads which are not designed for the volume of traffic and not enough parking for staff and patients and visitors. The problem seems obvious to me Medway was never designed and I believe can never be extended enough to cope with the demand which is only going to get worse with more house building etc coming all the time is it not time another hospital was built on a site specifically suitable for access etc and relieve the pressure, having one big hospital for an area is not always the best. Can someone not see common sense? or can the figures be manipulated to prove otherwise?

We thank you for taking the time to inform us of your experience within the emergency department at Medway Maritime Hospital. As you are probably aware, we are undergoing a redevelopment of the emergency area but this will take some time to complete. We are also trying to adjust our working environment to reduce the issues you quite rightly highlight, and help our dedicated staff function well with their roles.
