"Treatment on Ward 10T and Surgery for Hip..."

About: University College Hospital

On Wednesday 5th November 2014 my wife Anne fractured the neck of her left femur, was admitted to UCLH on Ward 10T and had a complete hip replacement on 7th November. She had tripped and fallen whilst walking on the platform of St Pancras Station. We were about to travel to Paris for 3 days to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary. In A & E around 1510hrs after X-ray, we were informed by the Consultant of the diagnosis and that a hip replacement was necessary. We asked whether Anne could be transferred to near home in West Yorkshire for surgery but the Consultant advised that UCLH was his recommendation as it was a class leading place for such surgery. Decision made, Anne was admitted to Ward 10T and I found accommodation in the area. It was soon apparent that the advice to stay at UCLH was not without foundation. I was able to visit my wife 2 to 3 times each day for the 8 days until her discharge on 13th November. Throughout that time we were extremely impressed by the high standard of care and kindness that we both received by every member of staff. The attention to detail of everyone from cleaners, porters, trainee nurses, agency nurses, NHS nurses etc was outstanding. It is tempting to mention names but to do so would be unfair to those whose names had not been noted. Surgery took place on our Anniversary and by the day afterwards Anne was encouraged to sit out of bed and attempt to walk a few steps using a walking frame. Within 2 more days she was introduced to elbow crutches. A plethora of staff each with different skills attended to my wife on a daily basis in a most sympathetic, considerate and encouraging fashion. We very much appreciate the the forward planning and arrangements made with our local Health Authority before Anne's discharge, and also for the provision of transport for us both to our home in West Yorkshire. She is now making steady progress towards recovery. It was evident to to us that all personnel at UCHL have the best interests of their patients at heart. In our opinion their dedication and skills set the benchmark for others to aspire to. Please convey to them our thanks and very best wishes.
